Why start Reformer Pilates?

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” – Joseph Pilates

Reformer Pilates helps you move more strongly, more freely and more balanced-whether you’re new or already love mat classes.

In the small specialist classes at Whitespace you will:

  • Build deep, lasting core strength  without overloading your joints.
  • Improve posture and alignment  so you stand taller and move better.
  • Increase flexibility and mobility  with controlled, supportive movement.
  • Enhance balance and coordination  for greater confidence in daily life.
  • Enjoy full-body conditioning  that’s both challenging and fun.

What is Reformer Pilates?

“The Pilates Method teaches you to be in control of your body and not at its mercy.” – Joseph Pilates

Invented by Joseph Pilates, the Reformer is a spring-loaded machine that supports and challenges your body in all the right ways. Unlike mat Pilates, which relies on bodyweight, Reformer Pilates incorporates a moving carriage, adjustable resistance, and supportive straps to guide your body through a wide range of controlled movements.

  • Exercises can be performed lying down, sitting, kneeling, or standing.
  • Classes guide participants through sequences that combine strength, flexibility, and coordination.
  • Adjustable resistance allows each exercise to be modified for different fitness levels.
  • The reformer can both support your body and increase the challenge, helping you achieve positions and muscle engagement that are difficult to access on the mat.

START YOUR REFORMER JOURNEY AND FEEL THE DIFFERENCE.

Reformer Pilates isn’t just exercise—it transforms how you move, feel, and show up every day. Over time, you’ll notice the shift in your posture, confidence, energy, and mood. That’s change worth signing up for.

What our students say

“Reformer Pilates has been a total game-changer for me. It felt accessible right from the start—the springs gave me support when I needed it, and I could build up gradually at my own pace. It’s supportive yet challenging, and over time it’s made me more balanced, more aware, and honestly stronger than I’ve ever felt.”

– Jaye Lincoln

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all! Reformer Pilates is suitable for all levels—from total beginners to experienced movers. If you are new to reformer classes you will need to attend 3 induction/beginners classes before attending intermediate and/or advanced classes.

Wear comfortable, form-fitting activewear that allows you to move freely. Grippy socks are recommended for safety and hygiene (and are often required). Avoid anything too loose, as it can get caught in the equipment.

While both share the same core principles, Reformer Pilates uses a machine to add resistance and support. This allows for a wider range of movements, deeper muscle engagement, and more targeted strength training.

Yes—many people use Reformer Pilates as part of rehabilitation. Its low-impact nature, combined with the ability to adjust resistance and range of motion, makes it ideal for building strength safely. Always consult your physician or physio before starting.

For noticeable improvements in strength, posture, and flexibility, we recommend 2–3 sessions per week. Consistency is key, and even one session a week can make a difference in how your body feels.

Reformer Pilates can support weight loss by building lean muscle, improving metabolism, and increasing physical activity. It’s especially effective when combined with a balanced lifestyle and nutrition.

Yes! That post-class soreness is a good sign you’re working muscles you may not usually target. As your body adapts, you’ll feel stronger, more aligned, and more energised.
