Key Aims & Outcomes

A foundational yoga course is a powerful journey of self-discovery designed to prepare and help you to dive deeper into this transformational and life-changing practice, learn to skilfully guide others and become qualified to teach yoga.

  1. Become a skilled, competent and confident teacher, starting to teach public classes while you’re in still training.
  2. Your own personal transformation through yoga practices, voice coaching, enquiry and discussion.
  3. Community focus - learning groups, study with others who share a passion for yoga and become friends for life.

Course Modules

Our modules offer a comprehensive introduction to the vast world of yoga and teaching. We hope that these modules provide a foundation from which to begin your teaching journey, and that they inspire a lifetime of deeper exploration.

asana

Explore person-centred approaches to practising and teaching traditional yoga postures, discovering how to make them as accessible as possible

sequencing

Learn the art of designing dynamic, effective, and intelligent sequences for various class styles. Through this module, you will receive mentoring to design specific sequences (dynamic, slow flow, beginners, etc.) that at the end of the training you will feel confident to teach.

anatomy

In this online module, Dr Andrew McGonigle will take you on a detailed journey looking at the anatomy and physiology of our incredible bodies applied to practising and teaching yoga. There will be a strong focus on using this knowledge of anatomy and physiology to make asana practices as inclusive as possible. Time will be dedicated to exploring how to best communicate with and support students who come to class with common injuries and conditions.

philosophy of yoga

Explore the lineage of yoga and how ancient texts like Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are relevant in today's life. There will be a strong emphasis on honouring the roots of yoga, and reflecting on how colonisation and cultural appropriation have impacted the yoga we see in the West.

inclusive yoga facilitation

Discover strategies for creating more inclusive yoga offerings by integrating a trauma-informed, social justice-aware, and accessible approach.

finding your voice as a teacher

Build the confidence to not only take space for yourself but also hold space for others as a teacher.

pranayama

Embark on a journey through a variety of yogic breathing techniques and learn how to seamlessly integrate them into your classes.

Why train at Whitespace?

Whitespace is proud to host this 200hr training course by The Yoga Quarter Learning Hub.

This immersive training is designed to help you not only deepen your personal yoga practice but also discover your true voice as a teacher through voice coaching. It will empower you with the skills and confidence to create a nurturing and inclusive space for others.

The teachers are all experts in their field and dedicated to passing that knowledge to their students through a very well-balanced and interwoven syllabus.

The focus is on the holistic practice of yoga, extending beyond perfect postures to emphasise the connection with self. We don't focus solely on the physical postures (asanas). Instead, we explore the holistic nature of yoga, which encompasses not only asana but also the philosophy and lifestyle.

A non-judgmental and non-competitive approach is taken, cultivating a true learning community. You will feel encouraged and nurtured, creating a safe space for exploration and development. Working in learning groups means you will share your journey with fellow practitioners offering community focus, fostering meaningful connections and friendships.

Throughout your training you will have full support from the teaching team.

Meet your teachers...

Each teacher has been invited to share their unique wisdom, expertise and specialised knowledge. So this gives you an opportunity to explore yoga from different perspectives.

THE BUSINESS OF YOGA

Deborah Berryman

Hi I’m Deborah, I’m the founder of our yoga teacher training programme. I’ve been teaching teachers for over 10 years and I’m told my love for yoga is infectious! I’ll be your mentor, helping you apply and refine your teaching techniques. We’ll also explore what it means to run a yoga business.

Mona Baur

Hi I’m Mona, your philosophy guide, together we will dive deep into the inner landscape of yoga. We’ll explore the history of yoga and what it means in the world today. You’ll also begin to understand the effects of the subtle body and how we can use this to grow on and off the mat.

Matt Huy

Hi I’m Matt, your anatomy expert. I will provide you with a light hearted and engaging approach to complex anatomical concepts! You won’t be expected to memorise long lists of muscles and bones, I want to teach a broad framework for understanding the human body for you to have your own insight.

Dawn Wright

Hi I’m Dawn, it’s my job to teach you the qualities of a great teacher and help you become one. Together we’ll geek out on the anatomy of asana – muscles, bones, bodily systems, biomechanics, body reading, healthy movement and holding patterns – I promise we’ll have fun along the way!

Susie White

Hi I’m Susie, I have recently joined the team and am thrilled to be guiding others towards their goal of becoming a yoga teacher. It’s become a constant companion in my own life.

Diversity scholarship

Whitespace is dedicated to increasing diversity in the yoga community and making yoga accessible to as many people as possible. Our mission to show all communities the life-changing benefits of yoga means we need to do our part to inspire inclusivity.

We recognise that increasing the representation of diverse teachers in the yoga community is central to fulfilling that mission, and we’re excited to commit to this by offering 1 scholarship, covering 50% of tuition for individuals who identify as Black, Brown or LGBTQ+ in our 200hr Teacher Training Programme.

The Whitespace Diversity Scholarship is an invitation and incentive to those students who believe that, because of the way they present in the world, they would help to create a more inclusive and safer environment for others.

Please carefully consider the spirit in which it was created and the mission of its intention, and if you feel you would be well served in receiving the award, we invite you to apply.

APPLICATIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIP MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 30TH APRIL

Frequently Asked Questions

If you feel that pull, it’s a REALLY good sign!

We are looking for serious and committed students with a solid foundation in the basic yoga postures. It is not about having an advanced practice and mastering the tricky poses, but rather a mature practice – knowing your own limits and coming to the mat with a willingness to learn.

We require a consistent yoga practice of at least 18 months. If you are interested in this course solely for personal development and not to teach, please reach out – we are happy to discuss options!

Absolutely! While this course will fully prepare and qualify you to teach yoga, it will also have a strong emphasis on developing your personal practice and understanding of yoga. If you are interested in that, we’d invite you to consider this transformative experience.

You will teach classes to your fellow students and friends & family while in training, probably made up of family and friends. This ensures that you are fully supported by your teachers while you are learning to teach.

You have an option of meeting the Lead Teacher in an online Introduction to Lead Teacher & Information Session (see above for date) which we highly recommend joining. You are also welcome to book a Discovery Call and speak to our Studio Manager and you are of course welcome to come and visit the studio!

EVERYONE feels like this before they start the training.  It’s perfectly normal to feel this way – we haven’t yet taught you the knowledge or given you the skills and experience that help to build your confidence.

There is plenty of practice to do this in a safe place with your co-learners. Like any skill, it can be learned, practiced, and refined. Over 90% of our graduates go on to teach, so we are very confident that – with commitment and hard work – you’ll get there too.

In the past, we have worked with students with varying learning needs. It is important we have a conversation with you to discuss what might make the learning more accessible so we are able to support you fully.

Most studios and gyms require yoga teachers to have an Accredited Teacher’s Certificate. On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Whitespace Teacher’s Certificate Accredited by Yoga Alliance. You will also need Liability Insurance and a First Aid qualification.

To make the learning experience as comprehensive as possible, you can anticipate spending 2-3 hours a week outside of the training days. That includes completing the assignments, reading, writing sequences and essays. You will also be required to have a regular practice.

Provided you have maintained your commitment to the process, we will always endeavour to support your progress and help you achieve graduation. We agree a Personal Development Plan to bring you back on track. Support may include ‘mentoring’ by senior teachers, private sessions, additional assignments or workshops and reassessments. Please note, there may be additional fees associated with each of these support methods.

Students must complete 100% of the contact hours to obtain their Yoga Alliance Accreditation.

Each training session is key to the course schedule and the training you will receive. While students can catch up on the content, it isn’t possible to recreate discussions, questions and reflections in the same way as being a part of the group. Therefore, we urge students to attend all sessions unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances.  However, we understand you may not be able to foresee every conflict, and so we have the following contingency in place.

If you miss a day you will generally be given extra take home assignments to complete and asked to meet with one of the teachers.  If you miss more than a day (up to a maximum of 4 days) you may be asked to schedule a private session. Private sessions must be completed within the course timeline and are subject to teacher availability. They will be charged at the current rate of £90 per hour. We reserve the right to change the price of these private sessions at any time.

If you miss more than 4 days the learning has been compromised and you can no longer obtain certification during this intake. You may choose to continue with the course simply for the learning experience. Or if you would like certification, you will need to retake the course, at a discounted price. We should note, due to high demand, spaces on future courses cannot be guaranteed.

We make our cancellation and refund policy transparent so you can make an informed decision. Please take time to read our T&Cs carefully.

In the event of Whitespace cancelling the course, you will receive a full refund, or the option of being transferred to another course or to have credit on your Whitespace account.

In the event of you cancelling your place, provided you have notified us at least 90 days before the start date you can receive a refund (less the non-refundable deposit), or the option of being transferred to a future course or a credit to your Whitespace account.

We regret no refund or transfer can be given outside of these terms, including if you are unable to attend due to illness, work, family, or other reasons. Before committing to a course, please ensure you can attend the scheduled number of sessions to get the most out of the programme. This cancellation policy is unconditional.

If we’re unable to open the studio, due to weather or other circumstances outside of our control, we will move the in-studio classes to livestream and then follow up the course with additional in-studio classes on a future date to give you the full qualification needed.

We are always looking for passionate, committed, well-trained teachers, who uphold our high standards of safe, inspiring and accessible teaching. Whilst we can’t guarantee any opportunities, our Teaching Certificate is the main gateway onto the Whitespace schedule. Over the years, many of our outstanding graduates have become part of the Whitespace teaching team.

Absolutely! Students often decide to develop specific skills in areas that are of particular interest to them such as pregnancy yoga, yin yoga, restorative yoga, yoga nidra, vinyasa yoga and we offer advanced trainings for all of these – please see our Teacher Events for more info.
