TRAINING WITH USWhy choose Whitespace?

Our teacher Training programmes are delivered  by Yoga Alliance Senior Yoga Teachers (SYT) who have over 60 years of teaching experience and hundreds of hours of ongoing development between them.

They are all experts in their specialist subjects and dedicated to passing that knowledge to their students through a very well-balanced syllabus.

You will be part of the Whitespace community from the start and be mentored through your transition from graduate to fully-fledged teacher.

You will teach your own real-life class during your training with full support from the teaching team. You may be selected to teach on the studio timetable.

YOUR TEACHERS

Deborah Berryman

Founder & Teacher Trainer
I’m a London run away who hides out in a tiny village in the country, having left behind a successful (and sometimes exhausting) corporate career.

Yoga, movement & meditation has had such a positive impact in my life, and I’ve spent the last 15 years on a personal mission to share the benefits of these wellbeing practices with others.

I love our community here at Whitespace – such a kind bunch of down-to-earth people, doing their best to find connection, peace and a little sweetness in a sometimes frantic world. Seeing these people ‘light-up’ about their life again is what gives me the most joy.

I try to get to classes here often (I LOVE our teachers!), recently exploring Somatics which has been a joyful way to slow down.

I bring a steady presence to the studio, helping to hold our vision at heart and make sense out of what can sometimes feel like chaos. All fuelled by a delicious pot of ‘nuclear green’ home-made soup for lunch (kale, spinach, carrot, leek and cumin if you’re interested!)

Dawn Wright

Teacher Trainer
I have been teaching since 2003 and hold a BWY Diploma and Yoga Alliance Senior Yoga Teacher (SYT). I have also undergone specialist teacher training in Vinyasa Flow and Pregnancy yoga. I continue my training by regularly studying with some of Yoga’s most respected teachers from all over the world. My approach is nurturing and supportive, giving students both the space and support to explore their own yoga practice, with a strong emphasis on the link of breath and movement. Expect to feel both energised and relaxed – and to have some fun.www.dawnwrightyoga.co.uk

Mona Baur

Teacher Trainer
I’ve been practicing Yoga for almost 25 years and have practiced and studied with a variety of teachers. Special thanks and gratitude to the teachings of Simon Low, who has laid the foundation of my practice and the teaching and guidance of Swami Pragyamurti and Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, whose wisdom and clarity have been an inspiration. My yoga style is rooted in a traditional Hatha approach, incorporating Buddhist mindfulness, yin yoga principles as well as creative and intuitive movements. My classes are taught partly in a creative, flowing style, partly holding postures, leaving space for students to work as deep or gentle as they need to. Pranayama and meditation practices are part of each class and the breath guiding each movement.www.redfieldyoga.co.uk

Matthew Huy

Teacher Trainer
A Senior Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, Matt has been teaching yoga for over 15 years. With a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from California State University Long Beach, a teacher certification from a Sivananda ashram in India, a Foundation Course with YogaFit, a Pilates Matwork Certification with Power Pilates and a Thai Yoga Massage Foundation Course with the Sunshine Network, Matt brings a variety of influences into his teaching. In his teaching of anatomy, Matt aims to provide the student with a broad framework for understanding the human body so that students can have their own insights, rather than expecting them to memorise long lists of muscle attachments and biochemicals. His course focuses on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and he always ties the information back to yoga. He is known for his light-hearted and engaging approach to presenting complex anatomical concepts.

Susie White

Teacher Trainer
It wasn’t until my mid 20s that I discovered yoga, but I remember walking out of that first class with a sense of sheer joy and giddy excitement. From that point on I was hooked. In 2015 I travelled to Thailand to take my first yoga teacher training in hot hatha yoga. Since then I have taken trainings in yin yoga, yoga therapeutics, yoga nidra, pregnancy and postnatal yoga. One of my favourite things about yoga is that there is always something new to learn or explore. No matter what you need in the moment, yoga is there to support you. It’s become a constant companion in my life. My classes are friendly, playful and explorative. I will typically provide a sense of challenge within my classes to inspire growth, but creating a nourishing experience is at the forefront of my teaching. I have recently joined the Whitespace teacher training team, and am thrilled to begin this exciting new chapter guiding others towards their goal of becoming a yoga teacher.

Leaving the Training
It is our aim and policy to facilitate teacher trainees who may be experiencing difficulties either with the training or in other areas of their life so they are able to complete the teacher training programme. However, we understand that in some circumstances this is not possible and students have no choice other than to leave the programme. In this instance, we will be unable to give you a certificate or graduate you from the training, and your course fees are still due and cannot be refunded.

Diversity scholarship

Whitespace is dedicated to increasing diversity in the yoga community and making yoga accessible to as many people as possible. Our mission to show all communities the life-changing benefits of yoga means we need to do our part to inspire inclusivity.

We recognise that increasing the representation of diverse teachers in the yoga community is central to fulfilling that mission, and we’re excited to commit to this by offering 2 scholarships, covering 50% of tuition for individuals who identify as Black, Brown or LGBTQ+ in our 300h Teacher Training Programme.

The Whitespace Diversity Scholarship is an invitation and incentive to those students who believe that, because of the way they present in the world, they would help to create a more inclusive and safer environment for others.

Please carefully consider the spirit in which it was created and the mission of its intention, and if you feel you would be well served in receiving the award, we invite you to apply.

Please understand that we receive a lot of applications for a limited number of placements and we will award those students we believe will benefit most from the training.

Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT TEACHER TRAINING AT WHITESPACE

The courses have exactly the same content taught over 200 hours. The intensive course is supplemented by post-course online mentoring over 2 months, while the 6-month course is supplemented by 100 hours of assignments, projects and exercises completed during the course period.

If you feel that pull, it’s a REALLY good sign!

We are looking for serious and committed students with a solid foundation in the basic yoga postures. It is not about having an advanced practice and mastering the tricky poses, but rather a mature practice – knowing your own limits and coming to the mat with a willingness to learn. We ask for around 1-2+ years regular and consistent yoga practice, preferably through class attendance – but we will also consider students with other relevant experience and/or an established home practice of at least 1 year.

You will also require a regular yoga teacher to provide a reference to support your application. In addition, some element of self-practice is viewed very favourably.

You will teach private classes of your own while you’re in training, probably made up of family and friends. This ensures that you are fully supported by your teachers while you are learning to teach. It also gives you the opportunity to earn money to cover course fees!

Definitely! We highly recommend you do this when exploring any Teacher Training Programme, to ensure you ‘connect’ with the course tutors. We offer regular online teacher training Q & A sessions, and also encourage you to take classes run by the course tutors to appreciate their teaching style. You are also welcome to book a call and have a chat with one of our team.

EVERYONE feels like this before they start the training (including our very own Course Director!). It’s perfectly normal to feel this way – we haven’t yet taught you the knowledge or given you the skills and experience that help to build your confidence.

There is plenty of practice to do this in a safe place with your co-learners. Like any skill, it can be learned, practiced, and refined. Over 90% of our graduates go on to teach, so we are very confident that – with commitment and hard work – you’ll get there too.

Most studios and gyms require yoga teachers to have an Accredited Teacher’s Certificate and Liability Insurance. On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Whitespace Teacher’s Certificate and be Accredited by Yoga Alliance Professionals, as well as having obtained insurance. You will also need a First Aid qualification but will have the opportunity to do a course at the studio while you are training.

ABOUT THE COMMITMENT

To make the learning experience as comprehensive as possible, there are assignments to help embed and integrate the learning.  Outside of the training days, you will also be required to undertake a regular home practice, attend regular classes and complete written assignments.

How often do you run training courses?
We run 3 courses per year; 2 courses are 300HR and 6 months duration and 1 course is 200HR and 30 days duration.

Provided you have maintained your commitment to the process, we will always endeavour to support your progress and help you achieve graduation. We agree a Personal Development Plan to bring you back on track. Support may include, but is not restricted to, ‘mentoring’ by senior teachers, private sessions, additional assignments or workshops and reassessments. Please note, there may be additional fees associated with each of these support methods.

Each training session is key to the course schedule and the training you will receive. While students can catch up on the content, it isn’t possible to recreate discussions, questions and reflections in the same way as being a part of the group. Therefore, we urge students to attend all sessions unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances.  Students must also complete 100% of the contact hours to obtain their Yoga Alliance Accreditation.

However, we understand you may not be able to foresee every conflict, and so we have the following contingency in place –

If you miss any of the online sessions it may be possible to catch up using the available recordings and successfully pass the course assessments to demonstrate understanding.

If you miss a maximum of 4 days: You may still complete the programme with your class provided you schedule a private session(s) or semi-private session with the course tutor. Private sessions must be requested in writing and completed within the course timeline. Private sessions are subject to the course tutor’s availability and will be charged at the rate offered by the relevant teacher. Whitespace reserves the right to change the price of these private sessions at any time. A 2 to 3-hour private session equates to one day. The current cost of a private session is £90 per hour. The maximum number of private make-up sessions is four.

If you miss +4 days: In this event, the learning has been compromised and you can no longer obtain certification during this intake. You may choose to continue with the course simply for the learning experience. Or if you would like Certification, you will need to retake the programme, at a discounted price, which is subject to availability. We should note, due to high demand, spaces on future courses cannot be guaranteed.

We make our cancellation and refund policy transparent – ensuring it’s available before booking, at the time of booking and also on your receipt confirmation – so you can make an informed decision. Please take time to read this carefully. All clients are asked to agree to Whitespace terms and conditions upon booking a course or workshop.

In the event of Whitespace cancelling the course:
you will receive a full refund, or the option of being transferred to another workshop or a credit to your Whitespace account.

In the event of you cancelling your place:
provided you have notified us at least 90 days before the start date you can receive a refund (less the non-refundable deposit), or the option of being transferred to a future course or a credit to your Whitespace account

We regret no refund or transfer can be given outside of these terms, including if you are unable to attend due to illness, work, family, or other reasons. Before committing to a course, please ensure you can attend the scheduled number of sessions to get the most out of the programme. This cancellation policy is unconditional.

If we’re unable to open the studio, due to weather or covid restrictions for example, we will move the in-studio classes to livestream and then follow up the course with additional in-studio classes on a future date to give you the full qualification needed.

ABOUT THE QUALIFICATION

Both courses are made up of 180 hours of in person tuition and in addition you will be required to complete assignments, yoga practice and personal study to help you to develop into a well-rounded and experienced teacher. Spread over 6 months considerable time can be allocated to developing knowledge and practice. Completing the course over 30 days is inevitably much more intensive but followed up with online mentoring to support the transition to real world teaching.

We are always looking for passionate, committed, well-trained teachers, who uphold our high standards of safe, inspiring and accessible teaching. Whilst we can’t guarantee any opportunities, our Teaching Certificate is the main gateway onto the Whitespace schedule. Over the years, many of our outstanding graduates have become part of the Whitespace teaching team.

After graduation, our teaching team will recommend a handful of graduates to teach their first class at Whitespace Studio in a prime-time schedule slot.

We also offer a greatly discounted rate on studio hire, at only £15 per hour – should you wish to practice teaching with friends/family.

Our graduates work in yoga studios, gyms and community centres. Many of them now teach here at Whitespace! You will have all the knowledge, experience, qualifications and insurance to develop your teaching career in the way that works for you. Yoga Alliance is an internationally recognised accreditation, so really you work anywhere in the world!

You will also be eligible to join the Register of Exercise Professionals, an organisation used (by gyms and other health service providers) to verify the acceptability of the training of its teachers.

Absolutely! We’re a Certified Yoga Alliance Training School.  This exclusive accolade demonstrates that our studio has met excellent standards in all the teacher events we run. Students may decide to develop more specific skills in areas that are of particular interest to them such as pregnancy yoga, yin yoga, restorative yoga, mindfulness, and meditation. We offer Advanced Level 2 Training for all of these and more – please see our Teacher Events for more info.  We also offer mentoring opportunities for students wishing to develop on a 1-to-1 basis with a Senior Yoga Teacher.

As a Registered Yoga Alliance School, all our trainee yoga teachers (TYTs) are automatically Accredited upon successful graduation, which includes written exams, practical teaching assessment, assignments, and ongoing assessments.

This recognised industry-standard will also include Insurance, which means you’re ready to teach straight away. Our graduates may use the title ‘Registered Yoga Teacher’ RYT as a sign of quality training. For more information, please visit the Yoga Alliance website.

Yoga Alliance Professionals is an organisation that was started to create nationally recognised standards for yoga teachers and yoga teacher trainings. More and more yoga studios and health club providers require their teachers to have some sort of quality assurance. Yoga Alliance demonstrates excellent training standards and is a mark of distinction which is worth promoting.
